Guided Auger Bore – North Manchester Golf Course

Project Overview

Trenchless Solutions Limited was contracted to install a new section of gravity drainage using trenchless techniques at North Manchester Golf Course as part of infrastructure improvements.

The project required a high level of installation accuracy to accommodate vitrified clay jacking pipes beneath landscaped grounds, with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment. The site presented challenges including restricted access, sensitive ground conditions, and the need to preserve the integrity of the golf course.

A trenchless approach using a PERFORATOR GmbH Guided Auger Boring system was selected to minimise surface disruption and ensure precise line and level control.

Description of Works

Working on behalf of Urban Regen, Trenchless Solutions Limited completed the installation of vitrified clay drainage pipes using a guided auger boring technique.

The works involved the installation of the pipeline via a pilot bore, followed by auger boring operations and the jacking of the product pipe into final position. Optical guidance systems were utilised throughout to maintain accuracy of line, level, and gradient.

All works were carried out within confined launch and reception shafts, ensuring minimal impact on the surrounding golf course and maintaining safe, controlled operations throughout.

Proposed open cut construction As built trenchless construction
Restricted access:

  • Significant disruption to landscaped golf course areas
  • Limited access for plant and excavation equipment
  • Close proximity to existing services
Restricted access:

  • No disruption to surface or surrounding landscape
  • Minimal working footprint within shaft locations
Health & safety:

  • Temporary deep excavations across open ground
  • Increased risk to operatives and site users
  • Extensive temporary works required
Health & safety:

  • No open excavation along the installation route
  • Controlled operations within designated shaft areas
Cost savings:

  • High reinstatement costs for turf and landscaping
  • Extended construction duration
  • Increased plant and labour requirements
Cost savings:

  • Minimal reinstatement required
