Guided Auger Bore – Macclesfield

Project Overview

Trenchless Solutions Limited (TSL) was engaged by Westshield Limited to carry out a trenchless installation at a Morris Homes residential development site on London Road, Lyme Green, Macclesfield. The project required the precise installation of a new section of gravity sewer beneath the site, avoiding significant surface disruption and minimising impact on the surrounding residential environment. A trenchless approach using the PERFORATOR GmbH Guided Auger Boring system was selected to ensure accurate alignment and reduce risk to existing infrastructure.

Description of Works

Working on behalf of Westshield Limited, Trenchless Solutions Limited completed the installation of DN150 Naylor Denlok vitrified clay jacking pipe using a 3-pass guided auger boring technique. The works were carried out from a client-constructed launch shaft, with a reception pit at the opposite end of the bore. Precise engineering and trenchless expertise ensured a successful installation, achieving seamless connections to the existing sewer infrastructure whilst minimising surface disruption and programme duration.

Proposed open cut construction As built trenchless construction
Restricted access:

  • Residential development site with traffic and access constraints
  • Close proximity to existing utilities and new build infrastructure
  • Sensitive ground conditions requiring careful management
Restricted access:

  • No disruption to road surface or surrounding development
  • Minimal working footprint within controlled shaft areas
Health & safety:

  • Temporary deep trenches across live residential site
  • Extensive temporary works and shoring required
Health & safety:

  • No open excavation across the site
  • Confined works within controlled shaft areas with strict confined space procedures
Cost savings:

  • High reinstatement costs across new build site
  • Extended dewatering and over-pumping
  • Increased duration of works impacting programme
Cost savings:

  • Minimal reinstatement required
  • Reduced dewatering and over-pumping
  • Shorter construction programme
Environmental:

  • Higher carbon emissions from prolonged plant use
  • Noise, dust and vibration affecting local residents and site operatives
Environmental:

  • Reduced CO₂ emissions
  • Lower noise and surface disruption throughout works
