Guided Auger Bore – Portsmouth

Project Overview

Trenchless Solutions Limited was contracted to complete a guided auger boring installation in Portsmouth to install a new section of gravity drainage pipework within a restricted working corridor.

The project required the installation of 60m of DN450 concrete jacking pipe through a narrow easement located between a live railway embankment and adjacent residential properties. The confined working area and surrounding infrastructure presented significant challenges, requiring precise line and level control whilst minimising disruption to the local area.

A trenchless approach using guided auger boring techniques was selected to avoid extensive excavation works and provide an accurate installation of the new drainage line. The works were completed successfully with minimal surface disruption and efficient programme delivery.

Description of Works

Working on behalf of the client, Trenchless Solutions Limited completed the installation of 60m of DN450 concrete jacking pipe using guided auger boring techniques.

The works involved the installation of a guided pilot bore to establish the required line and grade, followed by auger boring operations and the simultaneous installation of the concrete jacking pipes. Throughout the operation, drilling accuracy was carefully monitored to ensure the new drainage line achieved the specified tolerances.

Due to the restricted easement between the railway embankment and nearby residential properties, all operations were carefully planned and controlled to maintain safe working practices and minimise disruption to the surrounding environment.

Using trenchless installation methods allowed the project to be completed efficiently whilst significantly reducing excavation requirements, reinstatement works, and disruption to local infrastructure.

Proposed open cut construction As built trenchless construction
Restricted access:

  • Large excavation footprint within confined easement
  • Significant disruption near residential properties
  • Increased risks working adjacent to railway infrastructure
Restricted access:

  • Minimal working footprint throughout installation
  • No open trench along the pipe route
  • Reduced disruption to surrounding infrastructure
Health & safety:

  • Open excavations within restricted working area
  • Increased plant movement and excavation activities
  • Additional risks associated with nearby railway operations
Health & safety:

  • Controlled trenchless operations within designated work areas
  • Reduced excavation and reinstatement activities
  • Improved safety through accurate guided installation
Cost savings:

  • Extensive excavation and reinstatement requirements
  • Longer construction programme
  • Higher labour and plant costs
Cost savings:

  • Reduced excavation and reinstatement works
  • Efficient installation programme
  • Lower overall construction costs
Environmental:

  • Increased surface disruption and material waste
  • Higher noise and dust levels
  • Greater impact on surrounding properties and infrastructure
Environmental:

  • Minimal surface disruption throughout works
  • Reduced noise, dust and vehicle movements
  • Lower environmental impact and reduced CO2 emissions
