Horizontal Directional Drill – Malton

Project Overview

Trenchless Solutions Limited was contracted to install a new section of pipeline using trenchless techniques at Musley Bank as part of Phase 2 of the works. The project required a high level of installation accuracy to accommodate the pipeline beneath challenging ground conditions and within a constrained working area.

The site presented a number of challenges, including restricted access, proximity to existing services, and environmental considerations, making open-cut excavation unviable. A trenchless approach using Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) was selected to minimise disruption and ensure precise alignment.

Description of Works

Working on behalf of the client, Trenchless Solutions Limited completed the installation using a controlled Horizontal Directional Drilling operation.

The works involved the completion of a pilot bore, followed by progressive reaming to achieve the required diameter, and the installation of the product pipe via pullback along the designed alignment.

All works were carried out within a confined working area, ensuring accuracy of line and level while maintaining minimal disruption to the surrounding environment.

Proposed open cut construction As built trenchless construction
Restricted access:

  • Surface disruption across the working area
  • Traffic management constraints
  • Close proximity to existing utilities
Restricted access:

  • No disruption to surface or surrounding infrastructure
  • Minimal working footprint
Health & safety:

  • Temporary deep trenches
  • Extensive temporary works
  • Increased risk to operatives and public
Health & safety:

  • No open excavation along the installation route
  • Confined works within controlled entry and exit points
Cost savings:

  • High reinstatement costs
  • Extended construction duration
  • Increased plant and labour requirements
Cost savings:

  • Minimal reinstatement
  • Reduced construction programme
  • Lower overall project costs
Environmental:

  • Higher carbon emissions
  • Noise and vibration affecting surrounding area
  • Increased surface disruption
Environmental:

  • Reduced CO2 emissions
  • Lower noise and surface disruption
